I Never Thought Guided Tours Were for Me. Then I Became a Travel Advisor.

Why Guided Tours Are Having a Moment in 2026 (And Why They Might Surprise You)

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: a few years ago, I was convinced guided tours weren’t for me.

I pictured giant buses, rigid schedules, and spending my vacation following someone with a little flag from one attraction to the next. In my mind, guided tours were designed for older travelers who didn’t want to plan their own vacations.

As it turns out, I was completely wrong.

After becoming a Travel Advisor, I had the opportunity to learn much more about today’s guided travel companies. I completed Specialist training with leading brands like Tauck, Collette, Luxury Gold, Adventures by Disney, and several others. Along the way, I realized the guided tours I had imagined simply don’t represent what most companies offer today.

Instead, many modern itineraries include meaningful free time, authentic local experiences, smaller groups, and a pace that feels much more balanced than I ever expected.

In fact, I became intrigued enough to book my very first guided tour later this year. I’ll be sure to report back after I return.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. More and more of my clients have been asking about guided tours lately, and many of them share the same concerns I once had.

“Won’t I be stuck on a bus all day?”

“Will I have enough free time?”

“Isn’t that just for retirees?”

The truth is, those questions are usually based on what guided tours used to be—not what they are today.

Myth #1: “I don’t want to spend my vacation on a bus.”

This is probably the biggest misconception I hear.

Yes, many guided tours use a motorcoach to travel between destinations. However, that’s simply the transportation. It’s no different than taking a train or renting a car, except someone else handles the driving while you enjoy the scenery. In fact, many itineraries include trains, ferries, river cruises, or other forms of transportation instead of a coach.

Personally, if I’m winding through the Irish countryside or the Swiss Alps, I’d much rather admire the view than worry about driving on the opposite side of the road or navigating unfamiliar roundabouts.

The coach simply gets you where you’re going. Once you arrive, the real experiences begin.

Myth #2: “I’ll be rushed from place to place.”

This one always makes me smile because my concern is actually a little different.

I’m rarely worried about moving too quickly. Instead, I worry about spending too much time somewhere that doesn’t really interest me.

For someone else, that might be a museum. For me, it might be a shopping stop. We all travel differently.

Fortunately, today’s guided tours come in a wide variety of styles and pacing. Some cover a lot of ground, while others include leisurely afternoons, free evenings, or even full days to explore on your own.

That’s exactly why I spend time getting to know my clients before recommending a tour.

Do you love history, food, wine, charming villages, or vibrant cities? Would you rather check every famous landmark off your list, or would you prefer to linger over lunch at a neighborhood café and simply soak in the atmosphere?

There isn’t one right answer.

There’s simply the right itinerary for you.

Myth #3: “I prefer discovering places on my own.”

I completely understand that. Some of my favorite travel memories came from wandering without a plan.

At the same time, I’ve learned that local guides can open doors you never knew existed. They share stories you won’t find in a guidebook, introduce you to local traditions, and often provide access to experiences that are difficult to arrange on your own.

Ultimately, it’s less about someone telling you where to stand and more about helping you understand why a destination is truly special.

That’s a very different experience.

Myth #4: “Guided tours are just for older travelers.”

Not anymore.

Today, I’m seeing couples celebrating anniversaries, empty nesters checking off bucket-list destinations, solo travelers looking to connect with others, families traveling together, and busy professionals who simply don’t have the time—or the desire—to coordinate every detail of an international vacation.

Let’s be honest. Planning a trip today can feel like a part-time job. One minute you’re researching hotels. The next, you’re comparing train schedules, reading restaurant reviews, and wondering whether you need timed-entry tickets that sell out months in advance.

Vacation planning shouldn’t require project management skills.

Not All Guided Tours Are Created Equal

This is probably the most important point I want people to remember.

When someone contacts me about a guided vacation, I don’t immediately recommend a specific tour company.

Instead, I start by asking questions.

What vacations have you loved in the past?

What activities would you happily skip next time?

Do you enjoy early mornings filled with sightseeing, or would you rather travel at a slower pace?

Those conversations help me understand your travel style because no two guided tour companies feel exactly alike.

Each company has its own personality, pace, and strengths.

Some prioritize luxury.

Others focus on value.

Some specialize in intimate, small-group experiences.

Others excel at creating unforgettable family vacations.

My job as your Travel Advisor isn’t to tell you which company is “the best.”

My job is to find the one that’s the best fit for you.

Why I Think Guided Tours Are Thriving

I believe more travelers are realizing just how valuable their vacation time really is.

They want meaningful moments instead of forgettable ones.

They want authentic experiences instead of tourist traps.

They want to spend more time admiring beautiful places and less time figuring out train schedules, hotel logistics, attraction reservations, and transportation.

Someone still has to coordinate all of those moving pieces.

Many travelers simply prefer that someone else handles the logistics so they can focus on enjoying the journey.

That doesn’t make anyone a lazy traveler. Instead, it allows them to spend more time experiencing the destination and less time managing every detail behind the scenes.

Ready to Explore Your Options?

If you’ve been curious about guided travel but aren’t sure where to begin, I’d love to help.

The first step is simply a conversation. We’ll discuss the destinations on your wish list, how you like to travel, what you’ve loved on previous vacations, and even the experiences you’d rather avoid. Those details help me recommend the travel style that’s the best fit for you.

Maybe that’s a guided tour.

Maybe it’s a cruise.

Or perhaps it’s a custom itinerary designed specifically around your interests.

Whatever the answer, my goal remains the same: helping you plan a vacation you’ll remember for all the right reasons.

Whether you’re dreaming of Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Vietnam, the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, or another destination that’s been sitting on your bucket list for years, I’d love to help make it happen.

Let’s chat.
